South
Carolina is proud to recognize Carol S. Sunderman, Ph.D. as an outstanding
volunteer from our state. Carol first became involved in LDA of SC in
1980. After attending the national LDA
conference in Atlanta, GA, Carol and her colleague Jan Valle used information
from that conference to establish a support group for parents of students with
learning disabilities. This group met
monthly in the evening and was held in their portable classroom. The group
became so popular that it grew from a few students’ mothers to fathers,
grandparents, neighbors and friends of the students. Carol and Jan continued this support group
for five years.
Carol
joined the LDA of SC affiliate in 1980 and has served on the state board during
two periods of time for approximately 8 years. She also served as the president
of LDA of SC from 1996 -2002. While president Carol coordinated several state
meetings that included noted speakers such as Dr. Larry Silver and Dr. Cecil
Mercer.
Over
three decades Carol has provided assistance to families of children with
learning disabilities via individual consulting, assistance with IEP and
placement meetings, and numerous presentations at local, state and national
meetings.
Carol holds degrees
in Geography/Geology, Special Education (learning disabilities),
and Education Administration. She is a retired SC school district administrator and member of St. Peter’s
parish in Columbia, SC. Currently Carol volunteers at St. Peter’s Catholic
School as the curriculum consultant. Her
duties include working with teachers developing curriculum for divergent
learners, assisting with children who have special needs, analyzing test scores
and evaluating data, and individual consulting with families.
LDA
of SC is very appreciative of all Dr. Carol Sunderman has done for its
affiliate. Dr. Carol Sunderman serves as a fine example of what can be
accomplished with hard work and dedication. LDA of SC is honored to
recognize Dr. Carol S. Sunderman as an outstanding volunteer in the state of
SC.
